What Is Therapeutic Ultrasound?

Therapeutic ultrasound uses ultrasound waves as a treatment method, usually for pain relief or injury healing. There are two main types, which are mechanical and thermal ultrasound.

Mechanical ultrasound uses light vibrations that penetrate the soft tissue. This decreases scar tissue and creates gas bubbles.  As these bubbles expand and contract, inflammation promotes soft tissue healing.

Thermal ultrasound provides deep, penetrating heat to the affected area. This warms the area, which increases circulation, relaxes tense muscles, relieves pain, and speeds the healing process.

What Can Therapeutic Ultrasound Treat?

Therapeutic ultrasound can help with many conditions. It's typically used to relieve chronic pain and treat soft tissue injuries.

Conditions that can be treated with ultrasound include:

  • Sprains and strains
  • Ligament injuries
  • Joint pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Tendonitis
  • Arthritis
  • Muscle Spasms

What to Expect from Therapeutic Ultrasound Treatment

When you go to the chiropractor for therapeutic ultrasound, you'll start by sitting in a chair or lying on a table.  They will apply conductive gel to the target area. If you've ever had a diagnostic ultrasound, you are familiar with this.

Then, they will apply the transducer, which emits the ultrasound, to your body. They will move it around slowly. This typically lasts for 5 to 10 minutes.

You may not feel anything during the procedure. Some patients feel a light warming sensation or tingling. This sensation is enjoyable. You shouldn't feel any pain during the ultrasound treatment.

Once the procedure is completed, you can go about your daily activities.

Why Therapeutic Ultrasound?

There are a few benefits of therapeutic ultrasound that you should be aware of.

Drug-Free Pain Relief

Unfortunately, medications are often the front-line approach to treatment for pain and injury in conventional medicine. Rather than solving the issue, they simply mask it.

Therapeutic ultrasound allows you to get pain relief without the concerning side effects associated with many medications.

Complementary Treatment

One advantage of therapeutic ultrasound is that it can be used with other treatment methods, including chiropractic adjustment, corrective exercises, and massage therapy.

Because the treatment is drug-free and requires no recovery period, it's a perfect complement to other therapies. This allows you to get the best results possible by addressing your issue in multiple ways.
